Moominland Midwinter

Premiere 14 November

An exciting adventure in the magical Moominvalley

Tove Jansson‘s Moominland Midwinter is a beloved story from 1957. In it, Moomintroll wakes up in the middle of a winter’s nap and encounters for the first time a new and mysterious season, the events of which he has never witnessed before.

The rest of the Moomin family is asleep and the familiar landscape is covered in snow. In addition to Too-Ticky, who lives in the pool house, and Little My, who swoops wildly down the hill, Moomintroll also encounters other inhabitants of the heart of winter, the noisy Hemulen and the Ancestor who creaks in the corners, the beauty of the Northern Lights and a dangerous frost. After his winter adventures, Moomintroll has a newfound independence and courage – he is now the first Moomin to have experienced all the seasons.

Scare me all you want, he thought with delight. Now I’ve figured you out. You’re no worse than anyone else – once someone takes the time to get to know you.”

Tove Jansson’s Moomin story comes to life on the small stage of the Oulu Theatre through puppetry. The Moomin characters are designed by Helena Markku and the play directed by Merja Pöyhönen, two of the top names in contemporary Finnish puppet theatre.
