Children’s Theatre Festival
9.–12.4.2025
Introducing children to the magic of theatre
The idea behind the festival is very simple: to offer the best possible professional performances for children in Oulu. For us, a child is valuable not only as a future audience member, but also here and now, at their current age.
We ourselves are so excited about the potential of theatre to influence thinking, one’s experience of oneself and others, one’s notion of beauty and the connection between people that we want people of all ages to be part of this magic circle. A capacity for imagination, empathy and broader thinking is something all people of all ages need.

United by curiosity
Curiosity is what unites the festival’s creators and attendees: what wondrous and weird things can we create together today? We want to feed this curiosity, to celebrate imagination and to remind us all what a miracle every human being is. A miracle can be a flower pot that magically disappears on stage, but it can also be a very ordinary thing: people’s experience of not being alone.
At best, during and after a theatre performance, it feels as if you are not the only one who has this specific experience or thought, which allows you to perceive something shared, and this is a source of comfort and relief.
A play may ask you to watch quietly, or loudly ask you to participate at every turn so that your participation will affect the course of the performance.
It can make you cry or laugh, or make you amazed, astonished or silent. In any case, it will not be finished until you have experienced it: when it has been combined with your unique thoughts, emotions and experiences of the world. Without you, there is no performance. You matter.
Renewed festival
The Oulu Children’s and Youth Theatre Festival has been introducing children and young people to the joy of theatre for over 40 years. The festival was completely revamped in the spring of 2024 by separating it into two different week-long events, one for young people and one for children. The festival’s artistic director is Alma Lehmuskallio, the artistic director of the Oulu Theatre.
Varied collaboration
The festival is always organised in collaboration with several local organisations. The main partners include Cultural Centre Valve, JoJo – Oulu Dance Centre, Balettikoulu Sinikello, Flow Productions and Akseli Klonk, among others. The festival wants to invest in cultural activities in the entire Oulu region, valuing extensive cooperation and the expertise of professionals in different fields of performing arts.
Awards
The Oulu Children’s and Youth Theatre Festival was awarded the Lasten ja nuorten teatteriteko award for outstanding achievements in the field of children’s and youth theatre at the Thalia Gala arranged at the Svenska Teatern in Helsinki on 11 March 2012. The festival was praised for its meritorious and varied presentation and promotion of children’s and youth culture over its long history.
Programme proposals
The artistic director always welcomes any festival programme proposals. The festival is open for applications from May to October.
