Suburban Angels

Premiere 15th April, 2027

Bimbo’s time is running out

Suburban Angels takes the audience to an archaeological excavation thousands of years into the future. The performance invites viewers to witness the autopsy of Bimbo, examining her body like an ancient artifact.

Bimbo awakens into her own micro-era within a world transformed beyond recognition. Ancient Bimbo, the hyper-feminine martyr and messiah of late capitalism, wishes to return to being “dead empty no thoughts just vibes.” Wandering between a ruined home and a shopping mall, the character searches for direction amidst a broken heart and lost admiration.

Audiences usually watch Bimbo secretly and privately from behind a screen, but in this performance, Bimbo looks back. The performance pushes to the extreme the question of what it means to live and age as a femme in today’s Western consumerist society.

The performance represents an international co-production between &Espoo Theatre and the Baltic region’s largest theatre, Dailes Theatre. Featuring a Finnish-Latvian actor ensemble from all partner theatres, the production runs as a trilingual piece (Finnish, Latvian, and English).

The script by playwright Martta Mercedes Jylhä reached the finals of the prestigious Polish AURORA Drama Award in 2026. Minna Lund directs the production and created the concept.

The Jane and Aatos Erkko Foundation supports the execution of this production with a grant aimed at diversifying main-stage theatre.

Director

Minna Lund works as a Helsinki-based theatre director whose artistic practice ties closely to the stage and writing. Lund incorporates autobiography into her work while playfully drawing on pop culture and classic literature. She treats the stage as an altar for hidden desires and longings, seeking unconventional approaches unique to each piece.

Playwright

Martta Mercedes Jylhä is a Tapiola-born playwright and dramaturg (Master of Arts in Theatre and Drama 2025, Theatre Academy of the University of the Arts Helsinki). Her works explore narratives of the feminine body, the intoxicating experiences of capitalism, and the material hubris of consumer culture. Jylhä’s plays have been translated into English, Swedish, Latvian, and Polish.

&Espoo Theatre

&Espoo Theatre is Finland’s most international theatre, aiming alongside its audience to create a more diverse, surprising, and active society. Rather than running a traditional permanent institution, the theatre presents a programming structure resembling a continuous 30-year festival by engaging guest artists on a project-by-project basis and inviting numerous visiting performances from abroad. Their annual program features around 20 different productions.

Dailes teātris

Dailes teātris is the largest theatre in the Baltic region with over a century of history. Based in Riga, Latvia, the theatre reaches over 200,000 audience members annually. Maintaining a fast-paced repertoire of over 30 productions simultaneously, the theatre offers everything from new international drama to musicals and experimental performances. Through its artistic output, Dailes seeks to offer challenging, entertaining, moving, and inspiring theatre, guided by its motto: clarity, simplicity, and passion.
