A Story Where the Choir Plays the Leading Role

As It Is in Heaven is a story about a world-class conductor, Daniel Daréus, who falls ill and is forced to leave the grand stages of the world behind to take a step toward a different kind of reality. The play is based on the successful Swedish film Så som i Himmelen (2004) by Kay Pollak.

Daniel returns to his quiet home region. The landscapes of his childhood allow him space to listen to what has previously gone unnoticed. In this performance, senses are turned toward these sounds – toward the landscape flourishing around us and the people who are left on the edges of stories.

As Daniel begins to conduct the local mixed choir, voices, emotions, and stories smoldering beneath the surface begin to emerge from both the choir and its conductor. The village’s life transforms into shared music composed of grief, anger, joy, and love.

As It Is in Heaven is a protest against a polarized world: harmony does not arise from uniformity, but from the encounter of different voices and the acceptance of contradictions. It is a warm and humane reminder that we are nothing without a community where we are seen and loved.

Visiting designers Jaana Kurttila and Mirkka Nyrhinen from the Roskakatos Collective are responsible for the scenography as well as the costume, makeup, and hair design. The choir is conducted by Oulu-based influential choral expert Enni-Maria Lämsä.

The performance language is Finnish, and it is subtitled in English.
The stage rights for the play are managed by Nordic Drama Corner.
