Dickens’ beloved Christmas story
A Christmas Carol, the classic story by Charles Dickens, has become firmly established as part of Western Christmas traditions. The central theme of the story, the power of kindness, has provided food for thought regarding social values and moral issues from one century to the next, and also proves relevant in the Oulu Theatre’s version.
The classic play shows the emotional breakdown of Ebenezer Scrooge, a tough businessman and miser. Isolated man and cold-hearted towards the people around him, Scrooge is visited on Christmas Eve by the ghost of his former business partner Marley, who returns from the dead to warn Scrooge of a terrible fate unless he breaks the ice and finds new meaning in his life.
This is the start of a journey in which the protagonist Scrooge encounters difficult moments from his life from the past and present all the way to the final reckoning.
On the stage of the Oulu Theatre, the journey into this mindscape is guided by the logic of sleep. The high-density moments take shape as scenes in which time and place are associated with both the hustle and bustle of the modern world and the Dickensian landscapes of Christmases past.
English author Charles Dickens (1812–1870) is known as one of the most prolific literary figures of the Victorian era. His pen was a powerful tool that exposed the weaknesses of the class society of his time. His original style, humorous touches and evocative descriptions make his works interesting and timeless.
The play is directed by Heta Haanperä, and Janne Raudaskoski plays Scrooge. A Christmas Carol is a Christmas tale for adults that is not suitable for the youngest members of the family.
